In the gaming community, a player stuck in “elo hell” or “MMR hell” occurs when they are not able to score matches and advance to the next rank because of bad teammates. Elo hell results from poor matchmaking executed by the system, not properly matching players according to equivalent skillsets.
The term elo hell was popularized through the inception of the Gold rank in League of Legends, as players found it difficult to ascend beyond this specific rank. Although one’s skills may be in Platinum / Diamond, it is often difficult to near impossible to carry Silver and Gold teammates. However, today the term is widely known by most gamers around the world who like to play team-based competitive games. The term “elo” itself refers to the rating/ranking system in MOBAs and other multiplayer online games featuring competitive modes.
Is it Real? Depends who you ask?
We have interviewed numerous gamers with one account in Platinum, while having their other account stuck in Silver “elo hell”. However, the overall gaming community is under the belief that elo hell does not exist, for most games. It is believed that popular MMO titles like Dota 2 and League of Legends have a well enough built matchmaking system to pair gamers. At least according to our Grandmaster level GamerPals, “You might sometimes get paired up with the worst teammate imaginable, but that’s not always the case. And besides, other players in the game are going through the same matchmaking process. If the matchmaking system itself is broken, then every player should be experiencing the same difficulties, and it’s not just limited to certain gamers.”
The developers of League of Legends have denied the existence of elo hell as they claim ranking is the same for every single player in the game. At the end of the day, your performance and ranking ultimately depends upon your own skills.
CONSIDER TAKING A FRESH START
If you can’t find teammates who can help you get those wins that you need, try taking a fresh start in the game. Believe it or not, something as simple as this can be overlooked when we are frustrated and tired of losing. This will also allow you another opportunity at an early placement. Restarting will especially help when you are encountering a system glitch. The likelihood of you going through the same glitch twice, is highly unlikely after a restart.
BE AWARE OF ALL RECENT UPDATES
The elo hell glitch could be the result of a recent update in your game. So, be sure to search online to see if there are any other gamers experiencing the same issues. Sometimes performing a simple update can prove to solve a lot of issues that come up.
PLAY WITH TRUSTY FRIENDS
Instead of getting teamed up with random people online, ask your friends to play with you. Just be sure that they are on your level, or slightly better. Of course, not all of us have friends who are at our skill level. 😏 You can’t always carry friends who solo versus the whole enemy team on the front lines. 😂
HIRE NON-TOXIC, RELIABLE TEAMMATES
You could also try looking for group (LFG), finding different players online and befriending them yourself. But that’s just hard. Meet SQUAB! We connect you with collaborative, friendly, verified teammates in 3 easy clicks. Having someone you trust as a teammate will solve the elo hell dilemma. We match you with other gamers specific to your skillset. Discord is currently live and connecting gamers all over the world at any time, with our app launching later this year.
If worse comes to worst, you can try directly contacting the game’s developers. 😉
Shoutout to our GamerPal community for giving us their perspective on Elo Hell.
